BDMAC Past! Model flying has taken place on the Pleasington site for more than 60 years! Earliest recorded information goes back to 1938 when free-flight models were flown but it is believed that model flying took place for some years before that. Over the years the Club has moved to different fields at the Pleasington site but always retained a pressence on the site. The club underwent various name changes and restructuring - eventually to become the Blackburn & District Model Aircraft Club. Founder members included the late Norman McFarland and John Bridge. John is still an active aviation enthusiast and a life-time member of the club, regularly supporting our midsummer rally by providing an excellent P.A. commentary. Many competitions have been organised over the years, the World War 1 event in particular was very well supported, crowned with the awarding of the famous 'Blue Max Trophy'. The club has provided flying demonstrations for various schools and organisations - usually in aid of charity. The "Green Lane" event was always well attended by modellers and microlight aircraft too. For many years, the Club has hosted what has now become known as the BDMAC Mid-Summer Rally. Originally aimed at WW1 Scale enthusiasts within the Club, the event has developed over time to encompass all R/C disciplines and entries from all over the UK. The latest area of interest being gas turbines, or 'jets'. This event has, for many years, been run with the aim of raising funds for Derian House at Chorley, an independent Hospice for terminally ill children. Most years, with the aid and hard work of many Club members, we have been able to present Derian House with a cheque for a sum in the region of £800 and all participants feel privileged to be involved. Pleasington past - where are they now? Please email us if you know. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- BDMAC Present! BDMAC, still affiliated to the BMFA, is a thriving Club with around 100 members and a good proportion of Instructors and Examiners for both Fixed Wing and Rotory Wing aircraft. Relations with the local Council, the current owners of the site, are at an all-time high. The Club actively encourages new members, from any age group and any walk of life, with particular consideration for younger members who will become the future of the Club. With the emphasis on Safety, the Committee have put together a working Safety Document based upon our own rules and those of the BMFA. This has developed into a Safety Document that has been adopted by the BMFA. In order to maintain a good relationship with the Council each member is reminded that we must abide by the Club Rules and practices when operating model aircraft at Pleasington. The Club is administered by a Committee which meets on a monthly basis at Pleasington & Feniscowles Sports & Social Club to effectively manage the running of the Club and keep on top of developments. All members are welcome to attend and to contribute to the running of their Club. Club Social events are held here which have included talks by various model related manufacturers, importers and individuals with a specific interest. These are usually accompanied by a healthy supply of grub, provided free of charge to members courtesy of the Club. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- BDMAC Future! The future of any club is in the hands of its current members. The aim of the Committee, acting on behalf of the Members of the Club, is to steer the Club into the 21st century with the emphasis on safety at all times, encouraging new technology, but remembering that the Sport of model flying is ultimately for the pleasure and enjoyment of all members alike.
